Reflection
In addition to all of the active listening skills, reflection involves paraphrasing what the resident or surrogate decision-maker is saying to demonstrate your understanding and clarify.
Reflective statements can elicit a deeper understanding and result in new insights into personal values and goals
Open-Ended Questions
Another skill involves using open-ended questions. These kinds of questions require more than a yes or no response so they help prompt discussion and reflection. Close-ended questions are ones that call for a one word answer. For example:
